Support groups & Christian counseling

The support groups and websites for locating Christian counseling below may be helpful to some people, and they may come from a range of perspectives from liberal to conservative. Their inclusion below does not necessarily imply an endorsement from the Regeneration Resource Center.

Consider joining a support group

In order to share experiences with other families in similar circumstances, you might consider joining a support group. There is one church in Texas that sponsors a support group for transgender people and their families. If you live in Maryland, see the Families with a transgender member section on the Services page of this website for information about a support group in that state. However, most support groups for family members are for Christian parents of LGBT children:
-
This video from Harvest USA tries to answer the questions of parents of gay or transgender children about where they can go for help. Harvest USA's mission is to help individuals and families affected by sexual struggles by providing resources from a conservative perspective that address biblical sexuality to individuals and churches.
-
Harbor - an online support program
-
Freed Hearts - see especially The Parents Course: Core Issues & Tough Questions
-
Fortunate Families - a Catholic family, friends & allies ministry
-
Love Always - a group at Parkview Christian Church for parents, family, and friends of someone who is LGBT+.
-
LGBTQ support group for parents & families sponsored by a Catholic church

If you are not a parent of a transgender child, but the child of a transgender parent or other family member, consider asking your pastor about groups available in your area or contacting a counselor using the section below to see if s/he knows of any groups.

Seek out Christian counseling

Grief, depression, and anger can be challenging issues. If you feel it would help to speak to someone about these issues, here are some ways to find a Christian counselor, such as a licensed clinical social worker or psychologist in your area. If you live in Maryland, see the Families with a transgender member section on the Services page of this website for information about counseling in that state. Otherwise, consider doing the following:

-
Do a (public view) search of the membership directory of the North American Association of Christians in Social Work for a licensed clinical social worker in your area
-
Search the online directory of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies
-
Use Psychology Today's search engine for Christian therapists
-
Try Focus on the Family's network of licensed Christian counselors. This network represents a conservative perspective.
-
To find a psychiatrist, use the member search from the Christian Medical & Dental Associations. Scroll down the list of specialties and select "psychiatry."
-
Do a search using TherapyDen's directory of therapists. Enter your zip code and then use More Filters to select Familiarity with Faith and choose religious background.
-
Use the Online Therapy directory State filter to identify therapists in your area and then use the Faith Focus filter to select religious background.
